they're actually pretty damn durable and reliable on the E38, oddly enough.

On my E39, it's been good but the horror stories on the message boards make me vigilant. Once you replace the plastic pieces with metal replacements, they're bulletproof. I bought mine at 80k miles after the owner just got done putting $4k into it and in the last 80k I've only replaced a bleed screw, thermostat, and coolant tank. Fine with me.
